A young, beautiful Egyptian jewelry designer gets circumcised, but she won't let her clitoris be thrown into the Nile River, for she has something better in mind.
Interview by Janesse Vanda, Jewelry and Body Arts magazine
Nayma Abdulmadji, a 24 year old Egyptian born jewelry designer, now working in London, Paris, Milan and her hometown Cairo. Tall, slim, pretty with olive skin. She often models her own creations. With her looks, she doesn't need to hire models. Very modern woman, and faithfully embracing her religion, tradition and culture.
Janesse Vanda, a 28 year old writer and TV presenter. Have special interest in Body Arts. Last year a paparazzi took her picture leaving a piercing studio and walking a bit 'funny'. Many suspected she did clitoral piercing but she never admits it, saying she did her belly button.
When Nayma Abdulmadji decided to have herself circumcised, she decided that it has to have a lot more meaning than just embracing the Muslim tradition. The 24 year old Egyptian born jewelry designer takes it as the perfect opportunity for a new jewelry creation, something that has never been done before. She even had a plan to make a big trend out of it.
Janesse : How are you, Nayma??
Nayma : Great, excited, nervous, and...ehm...(whispering)...somewhat turned on...
Janesse : So, what's the story???
Nayma : Well, according to Muslim tradition, women should be circumcised before her wedding. Mine is coming soon, which mean it's time for me to be circumcised.
Janesse : I see, so can you explain how a Muslim woman is circumcised??
Nayma : Well, it's very simple. The clitoris would be removed. Circumcised women are considered pure and marriageable. In our culture, no Muslim man would marry an uncircumcised woman.
Janesse : I see. We also know you have a bigger plan than just the circumcision.
Nayma : Normally, after the circumcision, the clitoris would be wrapped up in white cloth and thrown into the Nile River, or buried in the ground. But for me as a jewelry designer, I think it's the perfect opportunity to create something that no one else has created before....
Janesse: Yes...
Nayma : I am going to have my clitoris preserved and use it as jewelry. Necklace to be exact. I think it would look very nice mounted in gold and wear it around my neck. Then the clitoris would be surrounded by diamonds. Here is a design that I have in mind. (Nayma showed her drawing)
Janesse : Yes, it looks amazing. The pink color really goes very nicely with the gold. And the diamonds really make it stands out. From a distance it would look like a pink pearl...
Nayma : Thanks...
Janesse : You know, we have seen some specimen of organs, animals etc in college, and they all looks pale and discolored and wrinkled. How do you plan to make yours fresh???
Nayma : Well, good question. Actually I had this plan in my head for years and years. Terrence is good friend of mine is a real expert taxidermist. He had developed a special technique to preserve it. It's going to be as fresh as when it was still attached to me. The technique was similar to the mummifying technique used in ancient Egypt. If you look at Egyptian mummies today they all look old and wrinkled, but don't forget they are about 3000 years old. Actually, for at least 300 years, they look as good as alive. Of course, he won't share the details. Even I don't know the details. He just told me that he will be there during my circumcision. As soon as my clitoris is removed, he will take it into his work room right away, in 3 days I can have it back, already preserved, and as fresh as when it was still between my legs.
Janesse : Interesting. I would love to see it when it's done.
Nayma : I promise you, you will see it.
Janesse : OK great...I wonder if we can make earrings out of clitorises...(jokingly)
Nayma : Well, I thought about it, but then I remember I only have one clitoris...If you let me have your clitoris as well, we can make a pair of earrings.
Janesse : Funny...Don't even think about it...I like mine exactly where it is.
Nayma : (smiling) Please let me know if you change your mind...I'm sure yours will make a great piece.
Few days later Nayma had her appointment with the doctor. Her circumcision would be performed in Cairo by Dr. Qomariah, who regularly performed female circumcision for the last 10 years. She has the largest circumcision clinic in Cairo and Alexandria, and do both male and female circumcision. Janesse Vanda and Terrence the taxidermist will also be there.
Janesse : Assalam mualaikum, doctor.
Doctor Q: Mualaikum Salam, my good friend.
Janesse : So we will be doing Nayma's circumcision today.
Doctor Q: Yes, Insya Allah (if Allah is willing) she will be circumcised today.
Janesse : You have done this for ten years, how many women have you circumcised???
Doctor Q: Well, we circumcise about 3000 women a year. According to my record, Nayma will be number 29.999...Perhaps you want to be number 30.000??? I'll do it for free...(jokingly)
Janesse : Not a chance...I'm going back to London in one piece.
Doctor Q : Allah has plans unknown to us. You can always come back here.
Nayma : I'm ready...
Nayma and Doctor Q went to the circumcision room. A nurse had been waiting there. Janesse had to wait outside. Janesse wanted so badly to take a look inside, but couldn't. Terrence just stood calmly, wishing Nayma all the best.
Nayma sat in the special chair. She did sugaring (Middle Eastern hair removal technique, using melting hot sugar) the day before, so her body was totally smooth and hair free. The circumcision was to be done in traditional manner, but with painkillers and modern hygiene standard. She looked excited and nervous.
The nurse first cleaned the area, then Doctor Q injected the painkillers right to the center of her clitoris. It made her jolt. While waiting for the painkillers to take effect in a few minutes, both Nayma and Doctor Q cited some 'Shalawat' prayer, praying to Allah that she will be a good Muslim, woman, wife, and mother. When the prayer was over, Doctor Q looked at Nayma and said "It's time." Nayma just nodded.
Doctor Q took a pair of forceps with her left hand and clamped Nayma's clitoris. She then pulled the forceps and stretched her clitoris. Then she took a pair of sharp scissor in her right hand and place it on the base of Nayma's clitoris. "Let Allah be praised..." she said while closing the scissor. Nayma's clitoris is cleanly cut off in one swift move.
The nurse immediately took Nayma's clitoris and washed it with water. She then placed in inside a container with liquid inside. The nurse immediately gave it to Terrence waiting outside. He then stopped a taxicab and told the driver he would give him extra 50 dollars if he can get to the airport in 20 minutes. Every minutes counts.
TWO WEEKS LATER
Nayma and Terrence were invited to have another interview with Janesse.
Janesse : How are you Nayma, Terrence???
Terrence : Great...
Nayma : Still a bit sore, but so very happy...:)
Janesse: So, how's everything coming along????
Nayma : Great! By the time I got back to London, Terrence had already finished his job. And he did such a wonderful job...I mean, it's pink and it looks very fresh...I mean I can place it back to my pussy and no one could tell that I have been circumcised. But when you touch it, it's hard like a stone. So it's perfect for my necklace.
Terrence : Thanks...It's a new thing for me. After years and years of preserving dead animals for the museum, it's nice to get my hands into something new and exciting. And this is real exciting...I wish I could do more of this.
Nayma : Don't worry Terrence...You'll get your chances...(then blinking an eye to Janesse)
Janesse : So, can we see it??
Nayma then showed off her new necklace. Her clitoris was the centerpiece, surrounded by diamonds. And it looks so fresh...
Janesse : Wow...amazing...Can I try this on???
Nayma : No...you have to get your own if you want to wear it.
Janesse : Oh no...that means...
Nayma : Just kidding...try it on.
(Janesse then put it around her neck)
Janesse : Wow...look at this...if I touch this, which is your clitoris, can you still feel the tingle???
Nayma : Nope, but I'd say it looks good on you. I think you should get your own.
Janesse : Maybe I will...

Janesse : So I heard that this clitoris necklace really took off in Egypt. Tell us about it.
Nayma : Yes. Alhamdulilah (Praise to Allah) It's now a big thing in Egypt. Lots of young women wants to have their clitorises preserved after circumcision. Terrence even plans to move there. There is no way he goes back and forth every time someone gets circumcised.
Janesse: Wow...
Nayma: After circumcision, the young woman can wear her clitoris necklace as a sign that she has been circumcised and purified, and ready for marriage. In Egypt, they call it "The Purity Necklace" So it's good for the men as well. They know who they should date.
Terrence : I'm done with dead animals. No more. From now on, it's clitoris only. Maybe I can even date my client. Hey, she has been purified. I know for sure.
THREE MONTHS LATER
The Purity Necklace really takes off in the Muslim world. Young women wear it as a sign of "I have been circumcised and I'm availabe for marriage." Once they are married, the clitoris necklace is kept by the husband, and replaced by the double ring pendant as a sign of marriage. So the men know who is available and who are not. Even if you go to some of the hottest night spots in Cairo, you will see young Egyptian women, dressed to kill in tight jeans and t-tops, wearing something round, pink and small on their neck. (If you look carefully, even in America and Europe, some young women started wearing it.)
Nayma, Doctor Q and Terrence work together and create a new business. It's a line of jewelry, with the clitoris as a centerpiece, called "Purity". The Doctor do the circumcision, then Terrence preserves the clitoris, and Nayma created the jewelry. More than 90% of women circumcised by Doctor Q have their clitoris made into jewelry. A generous 30% of the profit goes to charity, for women's interest. Terrence is dating a beautiful Egyptian girl, who is a former client.
A paparazzi snapped a picture of Janesse Vanda with an Egyptian man walking on the beach in the Red Sea resort. Weeks later, another paparazzi picture snapped a close up picture of her, wearing what looks like the clitoris necklace on her neck, and, yes, it has a metal ring on it.
